On March 17, 2026, Jensen Huang walked onto the stage at the San Jose Convention Center wearing his signature leather jacket. He does this every year at GTC — NVIDIA's GPU Technology Conference. Every year, the announcements get bigger. Every year, the numbers get harder to believe.
This year, he said the number: one trillion dollars.
Huang told the audience — and the world — that he expects purchase orders between NVIDIA's Blackwell and Vera Rubin chip architectures to reach $1 trillion through 2027. Not revenue. Purchase orders. The demand for AI chips is so enormous that NVIDIA is projecting a trillion dollars in committed orders over the next two years.
To put that in perspective: the entire global semiconductor industry generated about $550 billion in revenue in 2023. NVIDIA alone is projecting more than that in AI chip orders.
This is GTC 2026. And this is the week AI officially became a trillion-dollar industry.
But to understand how we got here, you need to go back to a Denny's.
In 1999, NVIDIA built a chip to render video game polygons. In 2026, that chip's descendant is the engine of a trillion-dollar industry that is rewriting medicine, transportation, energy, and the nature of work itself. The GeForce 256 had no idea what it would become. Neither did we.
In 1993, three engineers — Jensen Huang, Chris Malachowsky, and Curtis Priem — met at a Denny's restaurant in San Jose. They had an idea: build a chip specifically designed to handle 3D graphics. Personal computers were getting powerful enough to run games, but the CPUs of the era couldn't render 3D graphics fast enough. A dedicated chip could.
They founded NVIDIA. The name comes from "invidia" — Latin for "envy." They wanted to build chips so good that competitors would be envious.
In 1999, NVIDIA launched the GeForce 256 and coined the term "GPU" — Graphics Processing Unit. It was the world's first consumer GPU, capable of rendering 50 million triangles per second. It was built to make Quake III Arena look better. That's it. That was the use case: video games.

That year, Alex Krizhevsky, Ilya Sutskever, and Geoffrey Hinton entered the ImageNet image recognition competition with a deep neural network called AlexNet. The keynote ran long — it always does. Here's what mattered:
Vera Rubin gets agentic upgrades. NVIDIA's next-generation chip architecture, named after the astronomer Vera Rubin who proved the existence of dark matter, received new capabilities specifically designed for agentic AI — AI systems that can plan, reason, and take autonomous actions. The new Vera CPU delivers results with twice the efficiency and 50% faster than traditional CPUs.
The Groq acquisition bears fruit. In December 2025, NVIDIA completed a $20 billion asset purchase of most of Groq, the AI chip startup known for its Language Processing Unit (LPU). At GTC, Huang unveiled the NVIDIA Groq 3 LPU — the first chip from the acquisition. It's designed for inference workloads — running trained models in production, rather than training them. It ships in Q3 2026. This matters because inference is where the money is: every ChatGPT query, every Gemini response, every Claude interaction requires inference compute. And then came Olaf.
In perhaps the most memorable moment of the keynote, Huang invited Disney's Olaf — the snowman from Frozen — onto the stage. A digital Olaf appeared on screen, then appeared to walk through the screen and onto the physical stage. The demo was powered by NVIDIA's Newton physics engine and Omniverse simulation platform. The point wasn't the snowman. The point was physical AI — the ability for AI systems to understand and interact with the real, three-dimensional world.
Physical AI is the frontier. Training an AI to generate text or images is impressive but bounded. Teaching an AI to navigate a warehouse, fold laundry, assemble a product, or walk through a room without knocking things over — that requires understanding physics. Weight, friction, momentum, gravity. NVIDIA is building the simulation environments where robots can learn these things before they encounter the real world.
The root of all of this is worth remembering.
CUDA — the 2006 decision to let developers program GPUs for non-graphics tasks — is the single most important product decision in the AI era. Without CUDA, researchers in 2012 wouldn't have been able to train AlexNet on GPUs. Without AlexNet, the deep learning revolution would have been delayed by years. Without the deep learning revolution, there's no GPT, no Claude, no Gemini.
And CUDA exists because NVIDIA was a gaming company that noticed researchers trying to hack its graphics chips to do math. Instead of ignoring them, NVIDIA built them a tool. That decision — made when AI was still an academic backwater and GPUs were for gamers — created a moat so deep that in 2026, NVIDIA controls roughly 80% of the AI chip market.
Further back, the concept of parallel processing traces to the 1950s. The ILLIAC series at the University of Illinois explored how multiple processing elements could work on a problem simultaneously. The Connection Machine (1985) pushed massively parallel computing into practical territory. The GPU is the commercial descendant of that lineage — thousands of simple processors working in lockstep.
But here's what makes the NVIDIA story extraordinary.
